Disaster Preparedness

Print-Friendly Version

Do you know:

  • Depending on it's efficiency, it takes 1.5 to 3 gallons to flush a toilet?
  • You should store a half-gallon of drinking water per family member per day for an emergency?
  • A dog requires 2 ounces of water per pound/per day.  A 50 lb. dog would require 2.5 liters/10.5 cups/0.6 gallons per day?
  • Are you prepared?

Please store enough water for a minimum of three  days, preferably longer!

The wind storm of December, 2006 took out a lot of the power grids in our area.  Some people were without power for eight days.  Our facilities have auxiliary power generators so water and wastewater kept flowing,  but that may not always be the case.  In the event of a major earthquake, damage to our distribution system could cause you to be without service.  How long could you stay in your house without running water?

Please prepare!  Water is not only for drinking.  You will need it for…

Personal Hygiene  •  Cooking  •  Cleaning • Pets

Ways to Store Water

  • Store tap water yourself.  Check our brochure to see how to do it safely;

  • Buy bottled water and rotate it annually.  All water bottles, whether individually packaged in a case or in larger jugs purchased at a store, are BPA free.
